CGの合成技術が使われるようになる前、さまざまな工夫で不思議な映像を生み出した、特殊効果の工夫が面白い。
1937年のコメディ・ミステリー映画「Sh! The Octopus」では、1色だけで魔女のメイクを施し、その1色を消すフィルターをレンズに装着。映像の途中でフィルターを外すことで、魔女へと変貌する様子を映像化。
1960年のトワイライトゾーン・シーズン2のエピソード「嵐の夜（The Howling Man）」でも同じように1色でメイク、同色のライトを当てることでメイクの効果を消し、別の色のライトへ変えることで変貌。
その後の、障害物で俳優を一瞬隠し、徐々に変身させていくという手法も、シンプルながらも効果的。
シーンを細かくカットして、どんどん変化させるという手法は今でも使われているよね。
